Memorial Presbyterian Church is located in Assumption, Illinois, a town of 1400 people. Located in the heartland of the prairie, Assumption is twenty-five miles south of Decatur, Illinois; forty-five miles from Springfield; two hours from St. Louis; and four hours from Chicago (see location on a map).  The church has members from Assumption, Taylorville, Findlay, Decatur. Hospitals frequented by members are in Decatur, Springfield, Taylorville, and Pana, so the church’s ministry extends to those locations. The church serves children from Kemmerer Village, a Presbyterian children’s home in the country.  Presbyterians participate in joint ministry projects and activities with other local churches including the Methodist Church, the Roman Catholic Church, and the churches in the local ministerial association. We have Vacation Bible School with the Methodist and Roman Catholic Churches. The Presbyterians and Catholics have been involved in the Children’s Friendship Project of Northern Ireland. Youth from the two churches have participated together in work camps and weekend excursions. Assumption is a hub of agri-business. It is home of Sloan’s John Deere, the largest John Deere dealership in the country. Grain Systems Incorporated, manufacturer of grain bins and other farm supplies, is also a major employer of area residents.
